By its decision made in April 2014 the Municipality of Körmend confirmed the intent to protect the Batthyány Castle Complex and the surrounding park located in the centre of the city; utilizing it for cultural purposes confirming to the need of inhabitants as well as visiting guests. The decision included making both material and human resources available for project development. A result of this is the preparation of the project proposal “Renewal of Built and Natural Environment around the Körmend Hunting Lodge”. In close vicinity to this development multiple additional projects are already under execution.Though the intervention area is owned by the Hungarian State, the Municipality maintains and develops the Castle buildings and the surrounding park since these are representative elements of the cityscape. Trustee for the project area (listed by parcel number 6/2 within the city of Körmend)  is the Őrség National Park Directorate. The Municipality of Körmend is responsible for the project proposal, financing, execution and for sustaining achievements. Protecting both built and natural environment is one of the definitive responsibilities of a municipality. In addition the current management declared the protection and sharing of such local and environmental values to be an objective of strategic importance. Among these a key task is the restoration of the Castle park.

Aim of the project owner is restore the Hunting Lodge building (est. 1884) with respect to cultural utilization while focusing on ecological balance with the surrounding natural environment as well as embedding the facility to the local community. Tasks executed in the present following these aims result in long lasting effects where conservation needs for the historical  buildings and environmental protection issues both have to be considered. The former Hunting Lodge is in a seriously deteriorated state, its environment showing signs of abandonment. On almost 500sqm around the building, and within an environmentally protected area, the flower beds, wheel well and dovecot (each discovered by historical research conducted in relation to the garden area) has to be reconstructed. In addition walkways are restored in harmony with the environment to ensure better access. Landscape architecture plans are utilized to shape the greenery on the site.

For the 130 year old building of the Hunting Lodge the Permit Planning encompassed a Construction-historical research identifying five former reconstruction phases within the facility. Building details preserved in their original state have to be considered as protected historical elements. The planned intervention covers the reconstruction of 346,79sqm including a functional addition by shaping offices and exhibition space for the proper dissemination of cultural heritage as well as guest rooms supporting visiting researchers. Works to be conducted include the complete renewal of the exterior facade, reconstruction of the roof, replacement of windows/doors, shaping of new functional spaces, engineering systems modifications as well as ensuring accessibility for disabled people.

A key intention behind the design of the new functional spaces within the building is to present the environmental protection aspects of the Batthyány heritage for a wider audience. No former attempt was made to show the 33,47ha area of the park from a landscape archaeologist’s viewpoint, for which the Hunting Lodge offers an optimal facility. A link between cultural and environmental heritage is established by the work Carolus Clusius, a Flemish botanist of the XVI-XVII. Century. He discovered the lily represented by rays in the coat of arms of the Batthyány family. Another famous researcher of the gardens was Miklós Szinetár (born in the city). The catalogued tree- and plant collection left by him will be displayed properly in the building as well. In addition an ornithological collection currently hidden in storage due to a lack of display space will be exhibited with the possible addition of interactive elements within the walls of the Hunting Lodge. The Cultural Centre of Körmend, which was established by the local government, the Museum and the Library will be in charge of the operation. The utilization and the spreading of cultural heritage is one of the tasks of the museum’s deed of foundation.

Thematic representation of both natural and built environmental aspects within the hearth of the city for the general public utilizing museum pedagogical tools spreading environmental education ensures the establishment of a Batthyány Cult.

The long run sustainability of the project will have been insured by the operational cost provided by the municipality and the proposed incomes. The realization of the project is backed beside of the structural-works by the correct content development, purchase of equipment and the used services. The total cost of the project is 155.315.789 HUF, 5 % own resources is provided by the LG.
