LUTTE, a complex art and educational program, consisting of 4 modules - research, creation, education and management module –was implemented by the end of April 2017. The success of the research module was the high-quality training, workshops and international co-operation in the field of martial arts and sign language dance, furthermore the exchange of experience was decisive and awareness raising for the artists and professionals involved in the module. An important achievement was the collaboration with a cultural history consultant and dramaturge writer, namely one of the Icelandic partners, Mátyás Dunajcsik, who lives in Reykjavík, in the framework of which dance artists and contributors could gain insights into the world of Scandinavian mythology. Cooperation with the Reykjavík Dance Festival was held in August 2016, where artists from the Contemporary Dance and Sign Theatre Foundation participated in the international exchange of experiences.

Roma and non-Roma intercultural dialogue was achieved during the activities, on open days, at exhibitions and workshops alike. The audience reached, such as the families of the children, the village community or the school community were proud of the programme. We organised open days, excursions for the children throughout the duration of the project. We organised an exhibition of the works of art of the children and the mentors in Budapest at the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, a workshop at Kugler Art Salon, as well as an excellent final event for the children taking part in the project where the cultural products they created during the course of the project were on exhibit.

The aim of the Dancing on the Square project was to diminish the strong tension between social groups of Roma and non-Roma origins in Hungarian society, with a special attention to school children, their parents and their teachers.  The project aimed at promoting understanding, dialogue and cooperation primarily through a joint cultural project, the Dancing on the Square, initiated by one of the world’s best orchestras, the Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO), and through a process of self-organizing and self-expression in 5 regions in cooperation with the Foundation for Democratic Youth. The primary target groups of the project were 500 school aged children from 23 schools from 18 local communities, and youths and adults from 5 regions who were willing to participate in the development process through various tools, as well as citizens of Hungarian society.

The most important results of the project: a high quality artistic event was produced by BFO and 500 children on Heroes’ Square in Budapest performed to an audience of several thousands. The Dancing on the Square concert was a very special cultural event whereby the participating children became co-creators of the concert of a world famous orchestra and experienced what cooperation really means. Based on this exceptional experience, a summer camp was organized for the children and their teachers and at 5 locations (Apátfalva, Berettyóújfalu, Budapest, Ózd, Salgótarján) training and mentoring was secured for local champions ready to be part of the development process.

In the 2nd phase of the project a new rehearsal cycle started in order to prepare for the next performance on Heroes’ square and 5 regional meetings were organized where the children met, got to know each other and performed the dance to peers, and local adults.
In addition to that, BFO’s musicians offerred interactive musical programmes  for the participating children in Budapest and at the regional meeting site as well.

Members of both Roma and Non-Roma societies are dissatisfied with the backlog in education and employment, integration difficulties of the minority. Unsolved problems cause daily conflicts, tensions outbreak in more and more extreme ways. Social inclusion and equal opportunities cannot be made by economic and social policies only. Culture creates values and reinforces social cohesion, it is indeed a strong tool to know Roma communities, their life and cultural values, to acquire common experiences. Our project aims to visit 20 different locations - some of them underprivileged - in Hungary, reach Roma and mixed communities, the young and the adult, to cooperate in cultural projects, weaken the prejudices, facilitate intercultural dialogue by forum theatre techniques, workshops, literary performances and art exhibitions. The main objective is to improve mutual understanding in coexistence - in the workplace, institution or community -, to process everyday difficulties through cultural assets - in this case, theatre. Forum theatre provides a possibility to present real situations, take consequences to the extreme, and propose alternatives. Dramatic situation is always based on the clear relations between the oppressor and the oppressed. The conflict arises from the abuse of the privileged over the protagonist. Crisis is born with a balance of power: opponents are not willing to give in, accept a lower status, and the protagonist is unable to assert interests and raise status. Forum Theatre method concerns not only the emotional and mental identification of the audience (or target group), it expects the player/viewer to act on behalf of the protagonists, to take decisions that actually affect the turnout of the game. Forum Theatre is distinguished by all other dramatic methods because its inherent structure uses problem-solving as a rule: this is indeed beneficial in Roma/non-Roma mixed environments. This project outlines a complex conflict situation, as opposed to the usual forum theatre structure based on a singular conflict. Two wildcard characters (actors, connecting characters) try to interpret the conflict scene and make the audience re-enact it, replacing characters and proposing solutions that break the chain of conflict, with the oppressed standing up for their rights. Experience has shown youth to be incredibly justful and inventive in reenactments. The program is a sentitizer and also empowers self esteem: similar situations of oppression, ostracism, isolation in real life can be met with the ability to stand up for themselves or others. Roma community is heterogeneous. Some of them choose the path of integration, some of them don't. Segregation is present. Urban communities provide contact in school classes or apartment blocs: rural communities, villages are different, still, the minority is often segregated; people do not necessarily meet or know each other. We appreciate the chance - if only 90 minutes or a few days - given by the program to meet and discuss, providing a prerequisite of finding each other in the future. Forum Theatre programs at different locations involve students, then adults of the same community, providing an opportunity for professionals working with them, for them, to problem-solving workshops. The project is closed with a cultural event presenting the beauties of Roma arts - achievements of artists can be an inspiration for the young struggling with social exclusion.
