The main building and outbuilding of the school had low energy-efficiency, the improper insulation caused high heat-losses in winter, while it got quickly overheated in summer. The project set and reached the following aims:
1. Energy-efficiency improvements:
- 14 cm facade insulation
- 15 cm roof insulation
- replacement of doors and windows
- Installation of a 32.34 kW solar panel system
- Engineering: change of pumps, thermostatic valves and pipes
2. Energy management system: installation of an intelligent building management system
3. Capacity building: 10 teachers and 2 maintenance stuff were trained to sufficiently operate the new system
4. Awareness raising activities involved all pupils of the school in drawing, essay writing or presentation making competitions. Through media coverage the public of Zugló was involved and informed about the project.
5. Awareness raising study tour in the field of energy-efficiency: 14 local government professionals and 6 teachers participated on the three days study visit to Oslo and surroundings. They met and had workshops and talks with the notary and environmental referent of the Rygge local government and the director of the local school, the representative of the Federation of the Norwegian Municipalities, the designer of a positive energy balanced office building, representative of a local awareness raising cultural centre
