Violence against women is a burning social issue in today's society. Treating it as a taboo and victim-blaming that occurs also at institutional level deepen difficulties concerning recognizing cases of ill-treatment, developing appropriate attitudes towards victims, and preventing similar cases in the future. According to researches, violence against women cannot be stopped by means of criminal law only; changing social attitudes is essential.
Therefore, the aim of the project is to raise awareness to violence against women, and to promote methods that enable men to stand up against violence against women. The target group is young boys and men, that is to say the next generation. Making ill-treatment unacceptable amongst them would mean a remarkable step towards a complete eradication of violence against women.
First, with the cooperation of our Norwegian partner and in the form of a study trip, we will learn about the features and dynamics of (domestic) violence against women, possible ways of helping victims, and possible roles of men in combating abuse and ill-treatment.
As a result of our study trip, we will create a detective play using theatrical tools. The main character is a woman who was abused and injured by lye. This sensitizing detective play aims to enable participants not only to recognize domestic violence, but also to provide victims the appropriate help they need. The play will be presented as part of a conference, where Hungarian civic organizations and noted experts will hold practically oriented seminars and presentations. Our Norwegian partner will also take part in the awareness-raising of the participants. Participants will also take part in a workshop, where (with appropriate professional help) they will design their own artistic actions. In order to raise awareness, these actions will also be presented to the public. The detective play will be presented to a wider audience in 5 local high schools after the conference.
